If you grew up in a state where yearly car inspections were required by law, you would be in for a shock if you ever visit Chicago. No such state inspection is required in Illinois. And many people do not have car insurance/when they get in accidents that are their fault, they aren't willing to pay for the repairs that their cars really should get.
Car bumpers are often held together by bungee cords, duct tape and wire. Sometimes hoods are kept shut with twist ties or scrunchies. Dented doors keep their dents and countless windshields have noticeable cracks.
But yesterday at Dominick's, I saw the most ridiculous vehicle, that was still being driving, ever. The back part of a van, on the driver's side, was caved in so much someone sitting in the back seat would have to duck so the ceiling wouldn't hit them in the head. There was also plastic wrapped around the windows that had shattered, but had yet to be replaced. It's difficult to see in the above picture, but I tried to get evidence.
Please, Illinois, I promise I won't complain about the outrageous price tag you would put on such an inspection, as long as you implement it. And soon.
Hi Bryn! Amen to this. However, my car is registered in Texas (and owned by my father), and this summer I had to drive 20 hours home and 20 hours back to get it inspected in Texas!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! That is unfortunate. But I'd still feel safer on the roads if cars weren't held together with duct tape!
ReplyDeleteBeing military, we never have to get our cars inspected... BUT we bought an X5 here in IL last month so we thought we needed to get it inspected (since we actually reside in the state our car is registered in) and we were quite shocked that IL does not require this. Weird, seeing as they tax us up the wazoo here for everything else. But I mean, even when we didn't have to get our cars inspected (for 8 years!) we kept up with maintenance. Man, that person is crazy. Don't you love the Safe Auto commercials (do you have those up there?)? Those started when we moved to Ohio and frankly, it scares me. I am so afraid of getting in an accident, especially with someone who does not have proper insurance! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteOkay enough ranting, I need to stop reading your blog and go to bed!
