One of the perks (the only perk?) of working in academia: presents. Don't get me wrong. I'm not really that shallow. It's just, a few times throughout the year a faculty member surprises me with a gift; and it's really nice when it happens. Taking me out to lunch. An amazon gift certificate. A box of chocolates.
The cutest professor in my department (he's 80ish, grew up in The Netherlands and has an adorable accent) gifts me and my colleague with Belgian chocolates. Every year. He gives them to us after the school year has ended with a simple nod and a smile. And they are delicious! It just makes me smile.
