Almost every time a new fashion trend becomes really big, and I start to see it everywhere, I think, "Eww, that's ugly." I thought that about Uggs, booties, jumpsuits, skinny jeans, leggings and the list goes on and on.
But then, in almost every case, I change my mind. After Uggs got really big and then faded into regular circulation, I thought, well, maybe they're comfy. I still think they're ugly. But I ended up purchasing a pair in the winter of 2007. And I love them.
When skinny jeans first came back (anyone remember the 80s or early 90s?), I thought, "Why would anyone want to wear mom jeans? They're tapered!" But last fall I got a pair from AT Loft. They go perfectly with tall boots.
I even distinctly remember a time when I was walking across Northwestern's campus and I saw someone wearing booties. I thought, "Those are so ugly. Why, why are they fashionable?" Immediately following I sadly admitted to myself that I would probably end up getting a pair in the future. I haven't broken down yet. But, give it time.
I think that prolonged exposure to such things eventually wears me down. They become so common, I'm tricked into liking them. Or at least, that what I tell myself when I start to follow these trends.
Which brings us to leggings. I was a big hold out for the longest time. And here's why: The girls at Northwestern wear leggings and a t-shirt as their outfit. It looks really trashy. I would always complain to Neal. Leggings are basically tights. They are not pants!
But then I found the cutest dress from Francesca's (sorry, no picture to post). Off-white, lace, 3/4 sleeves. And super short. I couldn't not get it. And I had an occasion to wear it: My sister's bachelorette weekend. What to do, what to do.
Solution? LEGGINGS! Yes, I finally broke down and purchased black leggings. And best of all, I'm happy I got them. They made my Francesca's dress into an outfit. And, bonus, they're uber comfortable. No wonder all those Northwestern students live in them.
I don't think I'll ever crack on the jumpsuit front, though. I mean, come on. SO unflattering on everyone. What is Tyra thinking this season on ANTM?

Bryn, you and I are so on the same page here. Let's all say it together. LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS. I'll arrange a march if you want.
ReplyDeleteI will attend said march. Just tell me when & where.
