I'm so excited because the 2010 Winter Olympics are finally here! Tonight Neal & I had some friends over to watch the Opening Ceremony. It wasn't as spectacular as the Opening Ceremony of the Benjing Summer Olympics in 2008. But I think it fit with Canada's style.
The best part about the Winter Games thus far has been the advertisements for British Columbia, the province of which Vancover is located. NBC has been playing commercials for visiting British Columbia. Well-known celebrities are featured with tag-lines like, "You call it British Columbia; we call it home."
I think I like these commercials so much, and all the featured celebrities from the Opening Ceremony, because it causes me to exclaim, "So-and-so is Canadian?!" Several times tonight I was surprised by the realization that Canada counts Sarah McLachlan, KD Lang and Kim Cattrall as citizens.
Overall, ceremony itself seemed a little disjointed. I guess the theme was traveling across Canada and featuring everything this vast nation has to offer. But some of it was definitely lost on me. However, I am still thrilled for the games to begin. And I am happy for Vancover to be the host.
Plus, NBC has been offering all these awesome little tidbits of information to fill time. For instance, did you know there are more people in the state of California than in the whole of Canada? Amazing.
