Ice Dancing - Most boring sport ever...well, maybe

This weekend was pretty great with a lot of Olympics viewing. Mostly the feature in prime time was Ice Dancing. I have never liked Ice Dancing because I remember thinking it was boring when I was younger. My love of the Olympics comes from my mom who shows a lot of enthusiasm every four years.

This year she had told me she was looking forward to the Ice Dancing because she was under-whelmed by the Pairs skating. I agreed with her so I decided to give Ice Dancing another shot. Turns out, I wasn't just a little kid with a wandering attention span. Ice Dancing is boring. I didn't know this, but it consists of three programs, not two like every other figure skating competition.

The first is the "compulsory dance", which aired on Friday. It's the same dance, "danced" to practically the same music by every couple. I'm not kidding. I hope you had plans Friday night, because then you may have been spared. And it turns out four of the Ice Dancing teams are brother/sister teams. That information thoroughly creeps me out since the compulsory dance this year was the Tango Romantica. Ew.

Sunday night was a bit better. They showed the "folk dances" - traditional folk dances of any culture. Or at least that's the gist. One of the Country folk dances featured the music "White Trash Wedding" by the Dixie Chicks. Oh Olympics, I thought you were higher class than that. The top Russian team had a really offensive program in which they portrayed Australian Aboriginals. Enough said.

Major points to the commentators who seemed to really enjoy all the dances and be able to tell the good performances from the poor. More tomorrow on the last and final program, the "free dance". Then we'll have to say good-bye to the 'ballroom on ice' - NBC's favorite tag-line.
